Hovander Homestead Park is a lovely park in Ferndale, just north of Bellingham. They have over 700 acres of old farmland bordering the Nooksack River.
Part of having the park be "realistic" is having several types of animals at the farm. Most (chickens, ducks, geese, peacocks, and rabbits) live there year
round with lovely accomodations. Some animals, like the horses, cows, goats, and sheep are there until the weather gets too cold for the housing to be
adequate for them. The pigs, however, are donated each spring to the park, and then taken back in October/November and killed! The proceeds from their
bodies is given to the park as a donation.

When Rebecca heard of this, she immediately contacted the park to see if the pigs could be saved. She was given contact information for the farmer who
owned the pigs.

It was difficult to find a home for the pigs, Jillian and Mitchell. Pigs Peace Sanctuary in Stanwood could not take them. Farm Sanctuary couldn't transport
the pigs to their California shelter, but they gave Rebecca the number to BaaHaus Animal Sanctuary in Vashon Island. Glenda Person and Karen Eliason
at BaaHaus agree to take Jillian and Mitchell!

After emailing and talking with the pig farmer, he agreed to let the pigs go to BaaHaus Animal Sanctuary! BaaHaus has generously
agreed to give a donation equal to what the pigs bodies would sell for to the park.

Thanks, BaaHaus and Farm Sanctuary for helping with this great rescue!!

Although we wish the pig farmer would become vegan and take up another form of farming that didn't involve killing animals, we are happy that these
two pigs, Jillian and Mitchell, who will be transported in Rebecca's dad's minivan (yikes!!) on November 4, 2007.

We are very thankful to Mr. Paul Davis, the pig farmer, for his compassion toward these two pigs, and his commitment to giving donations to his
community.

Update: 11/10/2007

Since Mitchell would not get into the van via the ramp, Rebecca only took Jillian to BaaHaus. Jillian sleeps on the way down, only waking and standing to
grunt for Trader Joe's vegan cookies. (They're good cookies!)

Desperate for help to transport Mitchell, Rebecca  gets the Patron Saint of Pigs, Judy Woods from Pigs Peace Sanctuary in Stanwood. Judy generously
gives Rebecca her time (of which Judy has none) and expertise (of which Judy has a lot), and comes equipped with a truck, a trailer and a good driver,
Bill Ferguson. Mitchell gets in the trailer within 5 minutes, and goes to stay the night at Pigs Peace. The next day, we transport him to BaaHaus to be
with Jillian.

Jillian and Mitchell are now permanently placed at BaaHaus. They will live out their lives in happiness and peace there, thanks to the caring people
at the sanctuary, Glenda Pearson and Karen Eliason. These two lovely animals would have been killed if sanctuaries like BaaHaus and Pigs Peace did
not exist.

A video of the rescue is coming soon!
